Galle Fort
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the 17C Dutch Fort has stood the tests of time. Being strategically located it was sought after by the colonial powers, each of whom left their mark in the town. A true stronghold, it even withstood a devastating tsunami! Today, Galle is a mix of cultural and artistic activity and a great place to visit and it’s only an hour’s drive away
Weligama
Best known for the indigenous stilt fishermen, Weligama has an idyllic stretch of beach. There are several historical sites close by including the private islet known as Taprobane or Count de Mauny Island – accessible only at low tide. Weligama is further South, a short 20 minute drive away.
Mirissa
A mere half hour’s drive away, this is a world renowned site for whale watching. The ocean around Mirissa is often visited by giant Blue Whales as well as over five types of whales and four kinds of dolphins. Other activities such as sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkelling and boating are available here too.
Hikkaduwa
Famed for its shallow, crescent shaped bay, Hikkaduwa is a mix of beauty and hectic activity – from surfing, snorkelling, to coral sanctuaries and party ambience at night, ‘Hikka’ has plenty to offer. An hour’s drive along the wonderful coastline, ‘Hikka’ too is a must visit.
Yala National Park
Sri Lanka’s largest and most popular national park, Yala is home to the ‘big five’ – leopard, elephant, sloth bear, wild buffalo and sambhur. It is also a hotspot for birders with over 200 species of birds. Around 3-4 hour drive away, this is an excursion well worth making.
Kirinda
ancient legends and unspoilt beaches make Kirinda an isolated spot worth visiting. Imagine a desolate coast, long stretch of sand dunes and the ocean beyond. Around a 3 hour drive away, so if you are heading to Yala, stopping here is a must.
